The Rhode Island State House Illuminated in Pink
Each year during Breast Cancer Awareness Month the Rhode Island State House is illuminated in pink for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s Flames of Hope WaterFire.
Our friends at High Output Inc. always do such a great job with the lighting installation. It’s always beautiful.
The Rhode Island State House Dome
The dome is the fourth-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world, after St. Peter’s Basilica, the Minnesota State Capitol, and the Taj Mahal.
The Independent Man
On top of the dome is a gold-covered bronze statue of the Independent Man, originally named “Hope”. The statue weighs more than 500 pounds (230 kg); it is 11 feet (3.4 m) tall and stands 278 feet (85 m) above the ground. The Independent Man represents freedom and independence and alludes to the independent spirit which led Roger Williams to settle and establish Providence Plantations and later the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Each year at the Flames of Hope WaterFire members of the StateBallet of Rhode Island perform during the Illuminations of Light Ceremony. The performance begins on the steps of the State House and concludes with the lighting of “The Orb” in Waterplace Park.
“Keep it up!”
“Of course the Easter Bunny is an Essential Worker!”
We’re all in this together! So let’s do as the gov says and “Keep it up!”
“Knock if off!”
“Knock it off!”
“Knock it off” was a quote from Governor Raimondo at two news briefings as she warned Rhode Islanders to stop gathering in groups to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

About the WaterFire Easter Egg Hunt
Last week Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo delighted us all when she announced that she had decreed that the Easter Bunny was an “essential worker” and that she/he* will still be making the rounds, hiding eggs, and dropping off treats for the kids. Inspired by this can-do attitude we put together this egg hunt to help the Easter Bunny reach more people over the internet so everyone can have fun this weekend.
Some of the eggs hidden in our images are Pysanky (Ukrainian for Easter eggs). These beautifully painted eggs are considered by many to be the highest form of decorated eggs the world over. Learn more about the history of Easter Eggs.
* Yes, indeed. Of course the gender of the Easter Bunny is a long standing controversy. We contacted Easter Bunny HQ for the Bunny’s preferred pronouns, but have not yet heard back.
