Braziers In Memorial Park

The 12 Braziers that line the river in Memorial Park are the only non-floating braziers in the WaterFire Installation. Previously we have installed 3 braziers on the piers of the South Water Street pedestrian bridge, but these braziers have been re-allocated elsewhere in recent years.

Below the Boulevard

This section of Memorial Boulevard is actually a bridge. The river channels flow under these four lanes of traffic and WaterFire uses the space under the boulevard to run audio cables and as a shelter for some of our boats.

Before the river was uncovered this area used to be home to the widest bridge in the world. It is also rumored that gigantic man-eating eels dwell in the darkness below the street.

Formerly located at the focal point of Suicide Circle the World War Monument was carved in 1926 by sculptor Paul C. Jennewein from Westerly Granite.

Today the base of this towering pillar is used as a performance stage for characters from Ten31 Productions during WaterFire lightings.

Starry, Starry Night

The Starry, Starry Night installation at WaterFire was Inspired by Van Gogh’s 1889 painting, The Starry Night.Vincent” is a song by Don McLean written as a tribute to Vincent van Gogh. Also known by its opening line, “Starry, Starry Night”.

WaterFire visitors are welcome to wish upon a star or dedicate a luminaria candle lantern with a donation.

EELS!

Those are the Shrieking Eels — if you don’t believe me, just wait. They always grow louder when they’re about to feed on human flesh. If you swim back now, I promise, no harm will come to you. I doubt you will get such an offer from the Eels.

La Gondola

Authentic Venetian gondolas in the heart of Providence! Take a boat tour along the Providence and Woonasquatucket rivers aboard one of our gondolas.

The RISD Auditorium

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD /ˈrɪzdiː/) is a private art and design school in Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1877 and offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs across 19 majors.

The RISD Auditorium is an important landmark at WaterFire because it’s restrooms are open to the public at all full lightings, and for this, we are forever thankful.

About the WaterFire Easter Egg Hunt

Last week Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo delighted us all when she announced that she had decreed that the Easter Bunny was an “essential worker” and that she/he* will still be making the rounds, hiding eggs, and dropping off treats for the kids. Inspired by this can-do attitude we put together this egg hunt to help the Easter Bunny reach more people over the internet so everyone can have fun this weekend.

Some of the eggs hidden in our images are Pysanky (Ukrainian for Easter eggs). These beautifully painted eggs are considered by many to be the highest form of decorated eggs the world over. Learn more about the history of Easter Eggs.

*  Yes, indeed.  Of course the gender of the Easter Bunny is a long standing controversy.  We contacted Easter Bunny HQ for the Bunny’s preferred pronouns, but have not yet heard back.
