Music Program

Join us for a full lighting on Saturday, June 1, made possible through the support of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). The first full lighting of the 2024 season is set to honor the Commencement of RISD’s class of 2024 and celebrate RISD’s Reunion Weekend. The lighting will begin at 8:30 PM and the braziers will remain lit until 11:00 PM.

“Rhode Island School of Design is pleased to once again sponsor the first full lighting of WaterFire’s 2024 season as we welcome our alumni and families to Providence for Commencement and Reunion Weekend. The lighting is a wonderful addition to the many lively events RISD has planned for its multi-day campus celebration. We look forward to joining with the wider Providence community on the riverwalk for this special edition of the signature WaterFire event on June 1.”

— Bethany Costello, executive director of RISD’s Center for Community Partnerships

Remembering Michael Grando

This past winter, the WaterFire community lost a dear friend, Michael Grando, who brought his gentle spirit to WaterFire for over two decades. The community is invited to join an observance with the Eastern Medicine Singers and a drum circle in his honor at 7:30 PM in Memorial Park. WaterFire’s traditional observance of the Memorial Canoe, followed by Michael’s Thai boat, will depart Waterplace Basin around 8:55 PM on its voyage down the entire river. At 9:30 PM, near the drum circle, Michael’s daughter Crow Grando will don traditional makeup, and Pierrette will continue Pierrot’s mission of presenting flowers to those along the riverside. A collection of Michael’s images and writings, along with a remembrance book, will be at Market Square all evening.
