Thursday, September 17th – Starts at Sunset
Supported by Providence Tourism Council
Starts at Sunset returns to the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge on Thursday, September 17, for another evening of art, music, and community connection, supported by the Providence Tourism Council (PTC). Created in 2023, the series invites artists and observers alike to experience immersive placemaking against the backdrop of a Providence sunset, with WaterFire volunteers illuminating the bridge in the glow of five braziers.
“The Providence Tourism Council is proud to once again sponsor the Starts at Sunset series as we welcome residents and visitors to experience the unique installation of WaterFire,” said Alexis Gorriaran, Executive Director of the Providence Tourism Council. “This program continues to grow as a vibrant community event that serves as a cultural beacon and a catalyst for artistic expression, community connection, and citywide pride along the pedestrian bridge and the 195 District Park.”
Sunset is at 6:51 PM, and the five braziers will be lit at that moment, burning until 9:00 PM.
Music on Deck
The bridge’s lower deck transforms into a dedicated performance space, with acoustic music setting the tone for the evening. Luis Gilberto, a Providence-based singer-songwriter, takes the stage at 7:00 PM.
After Dark
Once the sun sets, guests can also take in a river installation of the iconic stars from Starry, Starry, Night, marking the return of PVDFest this same weekend.
Onshore Programming
- WaterFire merchandise will be available at both bridge entrances, with donations encouraged.
- Rhode Island Legal Services will host a table sharing information about their services, including legal support for veterans.
- The Guild Beer Garden will set up in 195 District Park on the city side of the bridge.
- Tizzy K’s Cereal Ice Cream will be serving on the east side of the bridge.
