Starts At Sunset is a community gathering on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge supported by the Providence Tourism Council (PTC). This unique activation invites artists and observers to experience a night of immersive placemaking set against the backdrop of a picturesque sunset. WaterFire volunteers will be illuminating the bridge with the glow of five braziers.
WaterFire Providence will hold the third Starts At Sunset event of 2025 on Thursday, October 30, and sunset is at 5:42 PM. The five braziers will be lit at 5:43 PM and burn until 8:00 PM. Halloween theming will include jack o’lanterns by the fires, skeletons on the bridge, and trick or treating at the WaterFire merchandise stands on either side of the bridge. There will also be fire spinning performances from Cirque De Light throughout the evening.
Music on Deck
The bridge’s lower deck will be transformed into a dedicated performance area, hosting acoustic music that will accompany the event’s overall ambiance. Olivia Dolphin, a Providence-based singer and songwriter, will be taking the stage to perform at 6:00 PM.
Onshore Programming
WaterFire merchandise will be available for purchase at both entrances to the bridge. Guests can pick up the latest WaterFire swag and are encouraged to donate at these stands.
The Ocean State Chess Association will be on the bridge playing live games of chess and teaching visitors how to play the game.
Artists from near and far are invited to gather with their sketch pads and easels to draw and/or paint the scenes of the city.
In addition to the activation and gathering of artists on the bridge, The Guild Beer Garden will be located in 195 District Park on the city side of the bridge, and Tizzy K’s Cereal Ice Cream, which will be open on the east side of the bridge.
Stop by the Providence Performing Arts Center for a Special Screening!
After the Starts at Sunset lighting, visitors are encouraged to walk over to the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) for a screening of Metropolis. Tickets are $13 and the screening begins at 8:00 PM.
The silent film era returns to the Providence Performing Arts Center, which opened in 1928 as a Loew’s movie palace, with METROPOLIS, the iconic silent film as it was meant to be experienced: with live theatrical musical accompaniment.
Peter Edwin Krasinski, world-renowned for improvised silent film accompaniment, creates a unique viewing experience at every performance. We proudly invite you to this never-to-be-repeated experience of the classic (and perhaps even more relevant today) film, METROPOLIS, accompanied by Mr. Krasinski on the Wondrous Wurlitzer.
