WaterFire Providence announces a full lighting on Saturday, May 30, made possible through the support of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), with additional support from Achievement First. The first full lighting of the 2026 season is set to honor the Commencement of RISD’s class of 2026 and celebrate RISD’s Reunion Weekend. This event will also mark the historical milestone of the organization’s 500th lighting, with programming set to take place in Waterplace Basin.

“Rhode Island School of Design is pleased to sponsor WaterFire’s milestone 500th lighting and the first full lighting of the 2026 season as we welcome our alumni and families to Providence for Commencement and Reunion Weekend,” said Bethany Costello, Executive Director of RISD’s Center for Community Partnerships. “The lighting is a wonderful addition to the many lively events RISD has planned for its multi-day campus celebration. We look forward to joining with the wider Providence community on the riverwalk for this special edition of the signature WaterFire event on May 30.”

Celebrate the 500th Lighting at Waterplace Basin

Head to Waterplace Basin at 8:15 PM for a community toast marking 500 lightings on the Providence River. The Providence Drum Troupe will perform on the Basin Stage, and the toast will be led by Joe Wilson Jr., Director of Art, Culture, and Tourism for the City of Providence. Raise a glass with your neighbors and welcome a new era of WaterFire. Beverages thanks to partner – Polar.

This season, WaterFire invites the community to step into the circle of firelight directly. Become one of 500 Milestone Torchbearers in the 2026 season and walk into the basin during the lighting ceremony, helping set the fires ablaze. Spots are still available for May 30.

Special guest lighter Butch Tavares will join the WaterFire boats, presenting the world premiere of his newest song, “Maybe Just For Love,” at 8:40 PM in the WaterFire music soundtrack. Two additional Tavares songs will be featured throughout the evening.

Achievement First will be in front of Market House with an interactive art wall, sharing the educational opportunities they offer across Rhode Island.

The Starry, Starry Night installation is back in Memorial Park near the Crawford Street Bridge. Wish on a star or dedicate a luminaria candle lantern to someone you love. New this year, the Burn Your Negativity ceremony invites guests to write down stress or negative thoughts on special burn paper, adding them to an orb for an 11:00 PM ceremonial burn on the river — transforming what weighs on us into light.

The iconic WaterFire phone booth returns to Memorial Park. Pick up the phone and leave a message about what WaterFire has meant to you over the years.

WaterFire Access Boat rides are available to reserve for May 30 and throughout the season. The Access Program provides a water taxi experience for children and adults with disabilities, ensuring everyone can share in the WaterFire experience. Contact access@waterfire.org to reserve a ride.

WaterFire Walking Tours are available for purchase online. Led by longtime WaterFire volunteers, each tour explores the origin story, artistry, and hidden corners of Providence’s most beloved event, following the path of the braziers before they are lit.

Be One of 500 Milestone Torchbearers This Season

Each season, hundreds of community members help carry the fire. In 2026, a special group of 500 Torchbearers will mark WaterFire’s 500th lighting; one of them could be you. Step into a leading role in bringing this significant moment to life.

Each torch procession welcomes a limited number of participants, offering an intimate and memorable way to experience the lighting. It’s a chance to help bring light to the night and play a visible role in sustaining WaterFire for the future.

Participation details: Torchbearers must be comfortable walking down steps into the basin while carrying a lit torch (approximately 2 lbs) and standing for the duration of the ceremony.
