“Absolutely riveting,”

– The Providence Journal

December 3 – 19, 2020
WaterFire’s Theater Under the Stars
475 Valley Street, Providence, RI 02908
Spanish Language Parallel Performance Channel Added on Select Dates

The Wilbury Theatre Group and WaterFire Providence presents a special outdoor, COVID-19 safe, return engagement of Constellations by Nick Payne, directed by Aubrey Snowden, December 3 – 19. Performed outdoors, under the stars, this is a remarkable way to experience the cosmic production that Motif Magazine calls, “An enjoyable, profound, thoughtful and intriguing exploration of, well, everything.”

This unique production will offer audiences the chance to safely see a play — at the drive-in. Patrons can see the performance from the warmth and safety of their cars, tuning into our new FM radio station to hear the audio at the volume they prefer. There are also properly-spaced out outdoor seats available, under heating lamps, on a first-come, first-served basis. Constellations will add Spanish-language performances on select dates, where the audience may choose to hear the play in English or in Spanish by tuning into separate FM stations that will broadcast a parallel live performance of the play in Spanish. For more information, visit thewilburygroup.org. The production stars Rachel Dulude as quantum cosmologist Marianne and The Wilbury Theatre Group’s Artistic Director Josh Short as beekeeper Roland.

WaterFire’s new COVID-safe outdoor theater venue was conceived and designed by WaterFire Artistic Director Barnaby Evans, who said “Art is an essential part of our lives and one of the many tragedies of COVID is its cessation of art enriching our lives, not to mention the devastation it has caused to the entire arts sector, with most theaters dark. In experimenting with this new theatrical venue, safety was the first priority. We also expect that a new hybrid form between live performance and videography will emerge to bridge the intimacy gap imposed upon us all as citizens, performers, and audiences by the required COVID distancing and separation. Constellations is a fascinating play to present in this era of COVID, as it is all about distance and closeness, immensity and intimacy, random uncertainty and yet the certainty of science. I am delighted to welcome audiences to see Constellations in this new outdoor experimental theater.”

Constellations will be presented December 3 – 19 outside the WaterFire Arts Center. Tickets, priced at $20 are available now by visiting thewilburygroup.org.

About COVID-19 Safety Protocols:

This is the third COVID-19 safe format that Wilbury and WaterFire have created with the approval and oversight of our team of epidemiology advisors. Your safety and the safety of our actors and crew are paramount in the creation of this program. Audience members can enjoy the play outdoors, entirely from the warmth and safety of their own cars. The audio experience will be there on the FM broadcast at the volume you desire. You may wear masks or not inside your car, with the windows shut. The visuals of the play’s dynamics will be visible both in person from the actor and realized creatively on the large 40’ widescreen in real-time with creative video close-ups. We have created this hybrid theatre and video form to keep you safe, and still allow you to entirely enjoy the arts so vital to our lives. This production was made possible by funding from the Governor’s new “Take It Outside” program to create safer options for Rhode Islanders and also complies with Actors Equity COVID Safety Guidelines.

You must purchase your tickets in advance at thewilburygroup.org to allow us to monitor the attendance limits and to conduct the required pre-event screening questions.

All guests will enjoy the show from the safety and comfort of their cars. Performers will be live on stage, with live video feed projections and audio sent directly to you through your FM radio!

Please note that all guests should only be in vehicles with people they live with or within the same “household pod”.
