Starting just after the WaterFire lighting ceremony (8:34 p.m.), canoeists and kayakers from around the community will paddle up and down the river with illuminated Japanese koi fish mounted to their vessels, in schools beautifully complementing the burning braziers. WaterFire Providence and the Narragansett Bay Commission have partnered to present this year’s Clear Currents community paddling event. Clear Currents incorporates close to 60 illuminated Japanese koi (fish) temporarily mounted on canoes and kayaks that registered participants will paddle up and down the river after sunset. The light from these brightly colored fish will beautifully compliment the 80 wood burning braziers installed on the river! Clear Currents commemorates the opening of the Narragansett Bay Commission’s Combined Sewer Overflow; an initiative that has greatly improved water quality throughout the bay area.

  1. Tim

Do you know if you will be having a Latin night as you did several years ago. It was a great event.

    Thanks

  2. What happened to the pastry guy that has been there the last couple of years. One of my favorite parts of the water fire! Definitely disappointed not to see them this year.

    1. He retired, we’ve tried to find another pastry vendor, but they were a pretty unique outfit. We miss them too.

    1. Hi Nicole, sorry we missed your note. There wasn’t a lighting on Monday. There is a basin lighting on Thursday night (the 27th) and the next full lighting is on Saturday, August 5th. See waterfire.org/schedule for more info.

  3. We are visiting Providence on August 8-9. We are interested in the Waterfire. Would there be an event that night? Also, we have a 7 year old and 4 year old. Any suggestions?
