Make it happen: Volunteer with WaterFire Providence

While there is a short break in WaterFire lightings downtown, the staff and interns are still busy behind the scenes preparing for the upcoming events. This hard work will all come to life on Tuesday, July 14th with a Basin Lighting and Saturday, July 18th with a Full Lighting of WaterFire. In order to make these events a success, we still have our Woodpile Workouts going on twice a week.

Join us every Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We’ve also got our weekly Prep Parties on Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Woodpile Workouts and Prep Parties are a fun way to help our WaterFire events be a success while getting to know other volunteers! WaterFire builds community through art, and these events and the amazing volunteers behind them are a very big part of that community. We all feel closer to our neighbors and our city every time we come together, hang out, and build all sorts of stuff for WaterFire.

Did you know that all of our boats are built by the hands of our wonderful volunteers and staff? It’s time to start building again, which means it’s your chance to leave your fingerprints on WaterFire history! Whether you have carpentry skills or not, whether you grew up on boats or are a landlubber, whether you can build a real house or have trouble with a Lego one, we can use your help! Join us next week as we start to build our new work boat and two new Guest Boats. Let’s put some love and hard work into these boats together.

As the summer continues, we will be hosting our ever popular Clear Currents event, which will double the fun of our Prep Parties! This year, we are hosting Clear Currents twice, during the  WaterFire events on August 15th and September 12th. Clear Currents includes dozens of illuminated Japanese Koi Fish mounted on canoes and kayaks with which registered participants will paddle up and down the river during the WaterFire lighting. Come on down and show us your creative side as we work behind the scenes to prepare the Koi Fish, soldering poles, torches, and paint poles. Plus, you may just get lucky enough to hear Gary singing his best Taylor Swift impression. You don’t want to miss it, so be sure to lend your time to us on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays!

Finally, the Volunteer Department has entered the world of Instagram, so give us a follow! You can track our progress as we prepare for events, get sneak peeks at upcoming surprises, and see what it’s like behind the scenes by following us at @waterfirevolunteer.
